12th Information School of Young Scientist 04.10.2024

September 23, 2024, the officials of the Client Service Department of the Russian State Library took part in the 12th Information School of Young Scientist. The interdisciplinary youth conference for specialists from Russia and from abroad was held 23 – 26 September at the Central Scientific Library of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Yekaterinburg. Its targets included comprehensive support for research initiatives of young scientists and promoting their professional development.

Over 100 specialists from 23 cities of Russia and from abroad presented results of their research in diverse spheres of knowledge – chemistry and biology, medicine and history, mathematics and ICT, philology and economy, geosciences, physics and technology, the humanities and informational library support. There were also considered matters of AI usage.

At the plenary meeting devoted to crossdisciplinary issues related to the development of the national and world science, Ms Elena Ivanova presented her speech "Academic Writing and its Role in Research Work" dealing with the problems of arrangement of research-work texts and skills any beginning scientist was to acquire for mastering fair usage of the results of the predecessor scientists and proper quoting. With the examples of plagiarism tests carried out at the Russian State Library from 2009, Elena Nikolaevna demonstrated how quoting could seem to be fair and legitimate from purely formal point of view, but remain unreasonable, incorrect or even dangerous in the perspective of scientific knowledge development at the same time.

The Information School of Young Scientist had been organized by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation and Central Scientific Library of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences under the support of the Section of special research, scientific and technical and technical libraries of the Russian Library Association.
