Being storage of book and knowledge, the Russian State Library continues advancing Russian culture and education within the nation and far abroad. It establishes partner contacts and develops new projects targeted at supporting cultural cooperation all over the world. One of the results of such cooperation turned out to be opening two new virtual reading rooms of the Russian State Library in the library of the Russian Centre of Science and Culture ("Russky Dom") in Belgrade and in Matica Srpska Library in Novi Sad, Serbia.

The library of the "Russky Dom" is considered to be one of the largest libraries in Europe. At present, its collections count approximately 60 thousand volumes, and it continues acquiring new editions of leading Russian publishing houses. These include belle-lettre books, technical manuals, books for children and youngsters, religious editions, as well as diverse textbooks and reference books, including those ones intended for studying Russian as a foreign language. The media collection of the library encompasses over 100 carriers with Russian films, with their translation into Serbian.

The Matica Srpska Library is the oldest national library in Serbia and first research library founded in the year of 1826. Its mission is to preserve cultural and national identity of the Serbs via the scope of diverse measures, this including popularising literary oeuvres of the nation. Nowadays its collections include over 4 million books in different languages of the world.

Virtual reading rooms of the Russian State Library were launched in Serbia under federal project "Forming the system of encouraging interest towards learning Russian" of complex national programme "Supporting and promoting Russian abroad".
